Instructions for the Operation and Maintenance of Boilers

This is chapter 51 of the Bureau of Ships Manual.

This is a technical manual which specifies in detail how boilers should be operated and maintained.

There is one specific mention of asbestos.  In the section about gaskets for boiler manhole and handhole, it specifies asbestos metallic cloth gaskets for saturated steam below 300 pounds per square inch boiler pressure.

Combining the information in this book with other Navy documents may assist in determining asbestos exposure.  This book contains sections on maintenance of brickwork, maintenance of boiler casings, and header packings, just to name a few topics.

We may have other Navy books that complement this one well.
