This manual is for a Navy Seabee Constructionman.
This book has a chapter on Utilities. It says that the Constructionman may assist in carrying out various types of duties that come within the scope of the Utilitiesman rating. Of these, the following references may indicate asbestos exposure:
- "Asbestos-Cement pipe may be used for sewer lines..."
- 85 percent magnesium for pipe lagging is mentioned and pictured.
- Asbestos Pump Packing. In a section about pumps, it says: "One of the major items needing frequent attention is the pump packing used to seal the machinery joints against leakage. Asbestos packing is inserted in the stuffing boxes or cavities around shafts of the pump and tamped into place. Packing may also be made from rubber, metals, and plastics."
Also, in the chapter on electricity, it says, "Wires and cables are commonly insulated with rubber. Varnished cambric, asbestos, paper, silk, cotton, and enamel are also employed as insulation where required."
