Asbestos Reference:
I only found one page referencing asbestos. In the chapter "Auxiliary Equipment," under the section on "Pumps and Motors," it says: "On some modern hydraulic transmissions, the SHAFT STUFFING BOX PACKING is of the square-braided pure asbestos type. This type of packing is easily removed. ..."
There are other sections of this book that might prove useful in combination with other navy manuals and books. For example, there is a section on gaskets that has details about how to make a gasketed joint. It says, "The most practical way to cut a full-faced gasket is to lay the sheet packing over the flange and mark the cutting limits by light blows with a ball-peen hammer." This book doesn't say what kind of sheet packing that the gasket should be made out of, but we do have other books from the same time period that might provide more information. For example, for sale separately, we have the 1963 Fireman Navy Manual, which shows asbestos gaskets and packing. You may also be interested in our other Navy books with asbestos information.
