ASBESTOS REFERENCES:
There is a lot of Asbestos information, including information about Asbestos packing produced by Anchor Packing Company. ("High pressure packing is made by the Anchor Packing Co, from asbestos fiber...")

There is a chapter on "Packing" which includes info about asbestos, including diagrams, tables, pictures and description. The Packing chapter is about 32 pages long.  Asbestos Fabric Packing is described.

Here's a quote: "The most popular type of rotary packing, and the one most universally employed, is an asbestos square plaited braid construction having graphite and lubrication distributed uniformly throughout, and is a packing structure which has a low coefficient of friction."

There is a 3 page TABLE listing types of Packing and their Uses, and recommended applications.  8 types of Asbestos packing are listed.

ASBESTOS is also mentioned in the BOILER OPERATION  AND MAINTENANCE chapter, in the section about INSULATING MATERIALS:

About Lower-Temperature Insulation - "The ordinary raw or pressed block used for this purpose is made up of diatomaceous earth and asbestos fibers or mineral wool."
