Instructions Relative to Heat Insulation

United States Navy Department
Bureau of Engineering
1939

This is a stapled booklet with about 5 pages. It is the original 1939 edition, printed by the United States Government Printing Office.

It has two sections, 1. Heat Insulating Materials, and 2. General Hints on Heat Insulation

It does talk about the efficiency of using magnesia and asbestos as insulation on pipe.

There is a section on Eighty-five percent magnesia. This section is pictured below for you to read.

Section 2 contains information on precautions in application. It gives instructions for what should be insulated. For example it says, "All hangers and other supports must be insulated at their point of contact from the pipe or other unit they are supporting." It also has instructions for insulating flanges and joints.

One section that might be of interest, says:

"(7) Once installed, heat insulation requires careful inspection, upkeep, and repair as well as the machinery units of a power plant. Lagging and insulation removed incident to repairs should be replaced just as carefully as when originally installed. Old magnesia blocks and sections broken in removal can be mixed with water and reused in the plastic form. All old magnesia should be saved for this use."
