Roofing Systems: Materials and Application

by John A. Watson

Hardcover, Copyright 1979, 354 pages.

Lots of ASBESTOS stuff in this book, including PICTURES of Asbestos felts being mopped by hand and of Asbestos felt receiving a glaze coat of asphalt from a wheeled mop bucket.

There is also a section entitled Asbestos Roofing Felts, written by R. L. Friklas, Director, the Built-Up Roofing Systems Institute. This section is about 2.5 pages long and it discusses the ASTM specifications, how Asbestos felts are made, how the felt is coated, and more. It says that the most widely used is Reinforced Asbestos Base Flashing.  It also discusses venting base felt, and also special light-weight asbestos felt used in vapor barrier systems.

Other places that mention Asbestos include:

Section entitled "Typical Roof Membranes" has a table that lists different types of roof membranes and the materials used. Asbestos base sheet and Asphalt Asbestos felt are listed in several paces.

QUOTE from PAGE 191:
"The cellulose fiber is not entirely satisfactory where moisture is present; asbestos is considered by some to be too costly, although it has demonstrated its excellent qualities for many years.  There are undoubted health hazards in the manufacturing process."

Table 7.2 Follansbee Terne Compared with Other Roofing Materials
- lists Asbestos shingles

Reflective Surfacing
Table lists coefficient for solar reflectivity for Asbestos cement.

Section on Fire Resistance and Fire Ratings suggests the use of unsaturated asbestos felt between courses.

Asbestos mentioned in the Felt Underlayment sections
