ASBESTOS REFERENCES:

This 1950s book provides information on the hazard of asbestos and also the use of asbestos clothing for protection.

About Occupational Disease caused by Asbestos, this book says:
"A survey by the United States Public Health Service showed that over one-fourth of all occupational disease exposures in the area surveyed were to inorganic, nonmetallic dusts, mostly from grinding.  This group included all the exposures to silica and asbestos."

About using Asbestos for Protective Clothing, this book says:
"Asbestos is used as protection against intense conducted heat and against flames.  When used with a radiation barrier of reflective material, asbestos offers excellent protection in fire-fighting and rescue work."

Also:
"Asbestos gloves protect against burns and discomfort when the hands are exposed to sustained conductive heat."

Also:
"Asbestos coats and aprons are often used as protection against hot metal and on operations where intense conductive heat is encountered."

About Respiratory Protective Equipment:
There is a paragraph on mechanical filter respirators that says, "Another type is approved for such toxic dusts as lead, asbestos, arsenic, cadmium, manganese, selenium and their compounds."  (Please see below picture for complete paragraph.)

About Using Asbestos in Welding:
"If welding must be done over wood floors, they should be swept clean, wet down, and then covered with asbestos blankets, metal, or other noncombustible covering."

Also:
"Sheet metal, flame-resistant canvas, or asbestos curtains should be used around welding operations to keep sparks from reaching combustible materials."
