This book covers a wide range of topics including boilers, combustion equipment, heating surfaces, boiler accessories, operation and maintenance of steam boilers, pumps, reciprocating steam engines, valve-operating mechanism, operation and maintenance of steam engines, construction of steam turbines and auxiliaries, and auxiliary steam plant equipment.

There are at least four sections which mention the use of asbestos:
- Chapter on pumps says, "Graphited packing made of soft asbestos is also used."
- The chapter on Auxiliary Steam-Plant Equipment  has a paragraph on piping systems which says, "Asbestos gaskets are used between the pipe flanges for water and saturated steam..."
- In the chapter on "Operation and Maintenance of Steam Boilers," there is a description of asbestos rope and a tar-based asbestos compound being used to repair a boiler.  It says, "The asbestos compound alone is satisfactory for small openings and for covering entire areas of brick settings."
- The chapter "Settings and Combustion Equipment" has a paragraph in which the use of asbestos rope is described.

CONDITION
