ASBESTOS REFERENCES:
From the chapter entitled, "The Basic Open-Hearth Furnace: Below the Sill-Plate Level" it says, "The insulation used varies considerably from one plant to another, but is normally of the diatomite-asbestos type."
The chapter entitled "The Electric Steel Plant" has a paragraph on "monolithic lining - the asbestos liner method." It says, "Considerable success has been obtained, particularly in the United States, by ramming the granular refractory between the coil and an asbestos cylinder."
Appendix 15, "Properties of Selected Insulating Blocks," has information on low temperature asbestos base brick. It says, "used for insulation of blast furnace stoves and under open-hearth furnace bottoms, etc"
