Asbestos References:
This book has a section on asbestos and recommends the use of asbestos paper and asbestos powder.
It says, "Asbestos is used in the welding shop in two forms - paper and powder.  No repair welding establishment could be considered complete without a roll of asbestos paper....." The text continues to say what the asbestos paper can be used for.
Then it says, "The powder has a wide range of similar uses, making it extremely valuable on both large and small work.  In many cases it can be substituted for carbon if the latter is not available."

The use of asbestos is also mentioned in three other sections.
